Dear Santa, This is What Single Mums are Really Asking For

Dear Santa,

It’s been… well, a year.
A year of juggling school runs, saturday sports, nappy changes, work, trying to keep everyone happy, late-night laundry, unexpected bills, and the occasional cry in the supermarket car park.

And before you ask, yes – I’ve tried to be good.
Not perfect. Not “Pinterest mum” good. But the kind of good that means my kids feel loved, safe, and seen – even when dinner was Weet-Bix and bedtime was late.

So this year, instead of asking for shiny new appliances or diamond earrings (though, if you’re offering…), here’s my real wish list…

1. A Full Night’s Sleep

The kind without midnight “Muuuum!” calls, without replaying tomorrow’s to-do list in my head, without waking up at 5 am to a barking dog. Eight uninterrupted hours, please. With bonus points if I wake up feeling rested – I’m note sure I even remember what that’s like?

2. One Less Bill in the Mailbox

Just one month where every envelope is good news. No “final notice” or “your plan has changed” surprises – just Christmas cards, kid’s artwork from school, and maybe a cheque from an unknown rich relative.

3. Time That’s Mine

Not “time to catch up on chores” or “time to answer work emails.” Actual, guilt-free, do-nothing-if-I-want time. A whole afternoon where the only decision I have to make is coffee, tea, or wine.

4. A Magical Car That Cleans Itself

Because between the crumbs, random socks, and mysterious sticky patches, I’m considering setting mine on fire and starting fresh.

5. A Hug That Lasts Just Long Enough

The kind where you can breathe deep and let your shoulders drop, knowing for those few seconds, you don’t have to carry it all alone.

6. The Ability to Pause Time

For the moments when my child’s belly laugh fills the room. When their tiny hand finds mine without thinking. When they fall asleep on my shoulder (little one) or actually want to hug me (big one) and I remember why all of this is worth it.

7. One Day Without Making Decisions

I make a thousand tiny choices every day. What to cook. What to pack for lunch. How to answer tricky questions about the other parent. Just one day where someone else decides what’s for dinner – and it’s exactly what I wanted.

8. For My Kids to Remember the Love, Not the Lack

I hope they remember the fun we had, the silly dance parties, the bedtime stories, and how hard I tried. I hope they see my strength as love, not just survival.

So Santa, if you could manage even one or two of these, I’d be grateful. But honestly, if all you bring me is another year with my little ones safe and healthy, I’ll consider myself the luckiest mum in the world.

P.S. If the elves are still taking last-minute orders, I wouldn’t say no to a cleaner. Or Ryan Gosling delivering my coffee.

Love,
A Single Mum
