If I could sit down with every woman on the day her relationship ended, hold her hand, make her a cup of tea or pour her a large glass of wine and tell her what lies ahead, this is what I’d say.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting thousands of women through separation, divorce and single motherhood. I’ve listened to countless stories, celebrated incredible wins, cried alongside women during heartbreaking moments and watched lives be rebuilt in ways they never imagined possible.
If you’re newly separated, you’re probably overwhelmed. You’re grieving, exhausted and trying to make huge decisions while your world feels like it’s been turned upside down.
So before you do anything else, take a deep breath.
Here are the 25 things I wish every newly single mum knew.
1. You don’t have to figure everything out today.
Your mind will tell you that every decision needs to be made immediately.
It doesn’t.
Focus on today’s problems. Tomorrow’s problems can wait.
2. The way you feel today isn’t how you’ll feel forever.
Right now, you might wonder if you’ll ever stop crying, sleeping badly or feeling sick with anxiety.
You will.
Healing takes time, but it happens.
3. Your children don’t need a perfect mum.
They need a mum who loves them, comforts them, apologises when she gets it wrong and keeps showing up.
That is enough.

4. Ask for help, and accept it.
If someone offers to cook dinner, babysit, walk the dog or fold your washing, say yes.
People often want to help but don’t know how.
Let them.
5. Don’t make every decision from fear.
Fear is loud.
It will tell you you’re going to lose everything.
Try not to let fear become your decision-maker.
6. Keep copies of everything.
Emails.
Financial documents.
Parenting agreements.
School correspondence.
Medical records.
Hopefully you’ll never need them! But if you do, you’ll be incredibly grateful you kept them organised.

7. Your healing isn’t a straight line.
Some weeks you’ll feel amazing.
Then something small – a song, a photo, an anniversary – might knock the wind out of you.
That’s normal.
Healing isn’t linear.
8. Stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle.
You’ll see women who look like they’ve “moved on.”
Remember, you have no idea how long they’ve been doing the work behind the scenes.
Stay in your own lane.
9. Protect your peace.
Not every text deserves a response.
Not every argument needs to be won.
Sometimes peace is more valuable than being right.
10. Learn about your finances.
Even if you’ve never managed the money before.
Knowledge reduces fear.
Little by little, your confidence will grow.
11. It’s okay to grieve the future you imagined.
You’re not just grieving a relationship.
You’re grieving birthdays, holidays, dreams and the life you thought you were going to have.
Give yourself permission to mourn it.

12. You don’t have to explain your decisions to everyone.
Some people won’t understand.
Some will judge.
Others will have opinions they weren’t invited to share.
Remember: they aren’t living your life.
13. Your children are watching how you recover.
They’re learning resilience.
They’re learning emotional regulation.
They’re learning that difficult seasons don’t last forever.
You don’t need to hide every emotion, but showing them that healing is possible is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
14. Boundaries are acts of self-respect.
You can be kind and still say no.
You can be compassionate without sacrificing yourself.
Healthy boundaries protect everyone.
15. Don’t rush to “be okay.”
There is no prize for healing the fastest.
Go at your own pace.
16. One day, the logistics become easier.
The parenting schedule.
The routines.
The school pickups.
The budgeting.
The endless calendar juggling.
One day you’ll realise you’ve stopped checking everything three times.
You’ll simply know how to do it.
17. Friendships may change.
Some people won’t know what to say.
Some friendships will quietly fade.
Others will surprise you by becoming lifelong supporters.
Let people show you who they are.

18. It’s okay if your confidence disappears for a while.
Separation has a way of shaking your identity.
You might question everything about yourself.
Trust that your confidence isn’t gone.
It’s simply waiting to be rebuilt.
19. Self-care isn’t selfish.
Sometimes self-care looks like a massage.
Other times it looks like getting enough sleep, saying no to another commitment or finally making that doctor’s appointment you’ve been putting off.
20. You are allowed to laugh.
Many women feel guilty the first time they genuinely laugh again.
Please don’t.
Joy doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten.
It means you’re healing.

21. You don’t have to stay angry forever.
Anger has a purpose.
It can protect you.
It can motivate you.
But eventually, it becomes heavy to carry.
Let it go when you’re ready, not because someone tells you to.
22. There is life beyond survival.
Right now you’re probably just trying to make it through each day.
Eventually, you’ll start dreaming again.
Planning again.
Living again.
Maybe even dating again.
That season will come.

23. You are becoming someone new.
Not because you wanted this.
But because life changes us.
One day you’ll realise you’re stronger, wiser and more compassionate than you ever imagined possible.
24. You are never as alone as you feel.
Thousands of women have walked this path before you.
Reach out.
Join a community.
Talk to someone.
You don’t have to carry this on your own.

25. Your story isn’t over.
This chapter might be one of the hardest you’ve ever lived.
But it isn’t the whole book.
There are still friendships to make.
Dreams to chase.
Memories to create.
Peace to find.
Love to give.
Joy to experience.
Your life is not ending.
It’s beginning again.
One Final Thought
If you’ve found yourself reading this in the early hours of the morning because you can’t sleep…
If you’ve cried your way through another difficult day…
If you’ve wondered whether you’re going to be okay…
Please hear this.
You are stronger than you know. One small step at a time, you’re becoming the woman who will one day look back at this season and realise she survived it.
You won’t always feel this broken.
You won’t always feel this afraid.
You won’t always feel this exhausted.
Keep going.
One day, you’ll look around at the life you’ve built and realise that while it may not be the life you planned, it can still be a beautiful one.
And I promise you, that day is worth holding on for.
