January isn’t about making resolutions you’ll forget by February. It’s about creating habits that support you not just for a month, but for the entire year ahead, and even beyond! As a single mum, you’ve already got enough on your plate. That’s why these five simple habits are designed to give you energy, clarity, and confidence, without adding more stress. Here’s how to make 2026 your thriving year.

Habit 1: Start Your Day With Intention

Instead of rolling straight into chaos, give yourself five minutes in the morning to set an intention. That could be a word (“calm,” “focus,” “strength”) or a question (“How can I make today easier for myself?”). I know it feels impossible, especially if you have little ones. But having a couple of minutes to yourself to start the day makes a huge difference. This small pause helps you respond rather than react.

Habit 2: Weekly Money Check-Ins

Finances are one of the biggest stressors for single mums. Instead of avoiding it, make it a weekly ritual. Implement a quick check of your bank balance, expenses, and any upcoming bills. Awareness gives you control, and control reduces stress.

Habit 3: Protect Your Energy With Boundaries

January is the perfect time to reset your boundaries. And that’s in areas of your life – with your ex, family, work, friends, and even your kids. Boundaries aren’t walls; they’re guideposts for protecting your time, peace, and energy. Pick one boundary to strengthen this month to get you started.

Habit 4: Build in Micro Self-Care Moments

Forget the spa days (though those are nice too), they are not going to happen right away! But thriving comes from daily, doable self-care: drinking enough water, stepping outside for fresh air, or a five-minute stretch before bed. Sometimes, looking after yourself is about making sure your basic needs are met.

Habit 5: Create Connection Every Week

Isolation is heavy. I am a big believer in connection and surrounding yourself with women who are in the same season of life as you. Make it a habit to connect with at least one supportive person each week – a friend, fellow mum, or coach. These conversations refill your cup and remind you that you don’t have to do this alone. Thrive Tribe is also a fantastic community of single mums who get it. And we have regular catch-ups that are so special and make a world of difference.

These five habits aren’t about overhauling your life overnight. They’re about building a foundation that supports you throughout the year. Start small, stay consistent, and watch how much lighter and stronger you feel by the time December rolls around.
